Budget Magnification Throw Lever

Variable magnification scopes are the standard for precision rifle competitors. Most shooters will select a magnification setting before starting the stage. However, it’s not uncommon to “lose the target” and have to back down the magnification to re-acquire it. Then swing the magnification back up to confirm that it is the right target. Small or stiff magnification rings make this difficult.

Several manufacturers offer “cat-tails” or “throw-levers” for their scopes. Others offer aftermarket solutions. They are often fairly expensive. Several years ago we came across a cheap and effective solution. Continue reading Budget Magnification Throw Lever

Ruger 10/22 Tactical Trainer (Part 2 do-over) Ruger BX-Trigger

BX-TriggerOne of the firs things we noticed when we started this project was how horrible the factory trigger on our 10/22 was. Not only was it very heavy for a light rifle, but when loading pressure the trigger would “creep” forward before eventually breaking. This is not a good situation for overall accuracy. The factory pull weight was close to six pounds. This makes it very difficult to keep precise sight alignment on a light weight rifle. The angle of the wrist portion of the stock also made it extremely difficult to get a “straight to the rear” pull. I knew that in order to get any meaningful results from our modifications, we would need to address the trigger. Continue reading Ruger 10/22 Tactical Trainer (Part 2 do-over) Ruger BX-Trigger

Hawk Hill Custom Barrel Review

Hawk Hill Barrel
Remington 700 with Hawk Hill Custom Barrel in a KRG X-Ray Chassis

Rarely does a week go by without an email or Facebook post asking us for a barrel recommendation. The truth is, there are a ton of premium barrels that will put you on the winners board when they are installed by a skilled rifle builder and wielded by an expert marksman. Often, Bartlein, Krieger, Rock Creek and others shuffle for the lead in “most used” barrel of the Precision Rifle Series. Recently we have been seeing more and more Hawk Hill Custom barrels showing up on the firing line and in the winners circle. We have used Bartlein, Krieger and Lothar Walther barrels on various different rifles. We felt that it was high time that we gave Hawk Hill a chance. Continue reading Hawk Hill Custom Barrel Review

Thunder Beast Arms 30P-1 Initial Impressions

Cadex Strike 30 with TBAC 30P-1Almost eleven months after paying for it, I walked out of my local FFL with the Thunder Beast Arms Corp. 30P-1 Suppressor. I can tell you that the wait was worth it.

The next day after picking it up, I was able to sneak out to the range for a short test run. The only bolt rifle that was threaded at the correct pitch AND had ammo on the shelf was the Remington 700 AAC-SD in a Cadex Chassis. I was slightly concerned because the 700 AAC-SD has not been a stellar performer. Continue reading Thunder Beast Arms 30P-1 Initial Impressions

Modular Driven Technologies LSS Chassis Review

MDT LSS ChassisThe market is currently flooded with chassis systems for the Remington 700 rifle. This is for good reason. Chassis systems offer several advantages over a traditional stock. One significant disadvantage to chassis systems is cost. Most are much more expensive than traditional rifle stocks. For this reason I was extremely excited when Modular Driven Technologies sent us one of their $399 LSS Chassis. Continue reading Modular Driven Technologies LSS Chassis Review

Sharps Rifle Company Relia-Bolt

Sharps Rifle Company Relia-Bolt

While we have seen an almost limitless assortment of rail systems, grips, stocks and other exterior parts to customize your AR15, few companies have chosen to address what is under the hood. The bolt is arguably the most important part of your rifle. It retains the combustion pressure of your cartridge safely in the chamber. It sees an enormous amount of stress and if it fails, renders the rifle useless.

Sharps Rifle Company released an innovative product at the 2014 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, NV. The SRC Relia-Bolt is an interesting update to the classic AR15 bolt. The first thing that most people will notice is the bright silver NP3 coating. NP3 is an electroless nickel finished developed by Robar. NP3 co-deposits sub-micron particles of PTFE (Teflon™) with electroless nickel. This results in an extremely corrosion resistant finish with some self-lubricating properties.
