Sharps Rifle Company Relia-Bolt

Sharps Rifle Company Relia-Bolt

While we have seen an almost limitless assortment of rail systems, grips, stocks and other exterior parts to customize your AR15, few companies have chosen to address what is under the hood. The bolt is arguably the most important part of your rifle. It retains the combustion pressure of your cartridge safely in the chamber. It sees an enormous amount of stress and if it fails, renders the rifle useless.

Sharps Rifle Company released an innovative product at the 2014 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, NV. The SRC Relia-Bolt is an interesting update to the classic AR15 bolt. The first thing that most people will notice is the bright silver NP3 coating. NP3 is an electroless nickel finished developed by Robar. NP3 co-deposits sub-micron particles of PTFE (Teflon™) with electroless nickel. This results in an extremely corrosion resistant finish with some self-lubricating properties. WieBad “Pump Pillow”

If it looks stupid, but it works…..it ain’t stupid!

Tactical rifle shooters tend to be a dogmatic bunch. If it looks different or challenges the way we think, we shy away. This was the viewpoint I took when I first saw “tactical pillows” show up at rifle matches. In my eyes they were bulky and looked incredibly silly. Then I used one.

I started my tactical rifle life with a military issued rifle, hauling all the associated support gear, comm equipment, water and if any room was left, a couple bites of chow. If it wasn’t absolutely needed to keep us moving forward or stop us from rotting away, it stayed in the rear. This mindset crippled me from accepting the “tactical pillow”. It was big and bulky. I watched how guys where using them. I believed that I could use my shooting sling to the same effect. I kept this mindset until we had to shoot a rooftop stage in a recent PRS match. The peak of the roof and the method I planned on using to engage the targets would make my little “brick” rear bag useless. My shooting partner was using a “Todd Tac Pack” from WieBad.com. This is a 9” x 11” x 4” bag with a lightweight filler and two elastic straps across the top. He offered me the use of his bag. I slipped it on my support arm and I was able to get enough height to stabilize the rear of the rifle. In fact it was rock steady. Continue reading WieBad “Pump Pillow”

Battle Systems Vinyl Tape

Battle Systems Vinyl Tape

No matter if you are a Marine Infantryman, SWAT Team Operator or just a guy going for a hike, securing loose straps is necessary step. Loose straps can be annoying, but also pose a significant problem when they tangle, catch in other gear or on the environment. In some situations they can even contribute to a negligent discharge.

In the past, electrical tape was the tool of choice for securing those straps. It was cheap, easy to find and quick to apply. Someone usually had a roll stashed in their gear. The problem is that electrical tape leaves a gooey mess behind when you remove it to adjust something or turn your gear in. For this reason I got a grin when I read a GearScout post about Battle Systems Vinyl Tape.

Battle Systems Vinyl Tape feels much like electrical taps, but comes in Coyote Brown color and has an adhesive that is specifically formulated for the task of securing gear. It is 3/4″ wide and comes on a 60′ roll for $4.99. In use the Battle Systems tape applies just like electrical tape. It sticks as well as electrical tape, but does not leave the goo behind.

The Gunbox Unboxing

The GunboxOne of the key responsibilities of a firearms owner is to restrict access to their firearm by unauthorized persons. This may be children in your household or burglars when you are away. In my professional life I have lost count of the number of burglaries or car break-ins that have resulted in placing more firearms in the hands of criminals. The problem is that we have to balance security with ease of access. A locked and unloaded firearm does you no good when evil comes to call. For this reason I take note whenever I come across a solution that allows you to maintain security but instantly access your firearm. Continue reading The Gunbox Unboxing

Nightforce B.E.A.S.T.

We just took delivery of a brand new Nightforce B.E.A.S.T. 5-25x56mm F 1 rifle scope. We asked for Mil turrets and H-59 reticle since the “Mil-R” reticle is still a few weeks out. This scope truly is a “beast”. Ours came with the standard Nightforce bikini style scope cover and a set of Nightforce flip up caps. Nightforce was also kind enough to send out a Unimount. Once we get it mounted up and twist the turrets we will get a review out to you!

Condor Summit Zero Lightweight Softshell Jacket Review

Condor Summit Zero SoftshellI love Soft Shell Jackets. I have been using the Condor Outdoor Summit Zero Soft Shell for almost a year now. It has worked well in a range of climates all over the US.

The Summit Zero is the latest in Condor’s jacket lineup. It is constructed of a four way elastic stretch material with a polyurethane membrane. This material gives you great wind blocking and water resistant properties while still allowing a wide range of motion. This is very beneficial for weapons manipulation or dynamic movement.
