2011 SHOT Show Coverage

Page 2

The 2011 Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show has wrapped up for another year. It was held at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The SHOT Show is not open to the public. In order to gain entry you have to have some association with a related business. However in many cases the "association" was loose at best. Photos were prohibited except for credentialed members of the press.

This was my first time at SHOT and I was not quite sure what to expect. Sensory overload was the feeling of the day. If it was new and hot, it was on display at SHOT. If it was new and top-secret it was hidden away at SHOT.

We didn't get the extensive coverage we had hoped for, but we will be better prepared for next year.

Manners Composite Stocks

Manners Stocks has been known in the tactical rifle community for high quality stocks for some time. They are extremely proud of the strength of their stocks. One of the displays in the booth was a Manners Stock that you could stand, jump or stomp on. It was a veteran of several SHOT Shows as evident by the sharpie marks on the side.

This year MCS introduced two new features. The first is molded in color gelcoat. Previous manners stocks had a painted on finish. This was one of the biggest external differenced between Manners and McMillan. Now the line blurs. The gelcoat finishes looked extremely nice. However one problem with gelcoat is it's usually slick. Even when there is a molded in texture, it's still a glossy finish. This is where the second feature from Manners comes in. They offer a matte clear finish over the gelcoat. This is a very attractive finish that is non-reflective.

Manners had several stocks on hand equipped with their Mini Chassis system. This system eliminates the need for bottom metal or bedding. When the Manners Stock hits your door it's ready to accept the action and head to the range.

One tantalizing tidbit that had me drooling was the Manners folding stock. This was a well designed and machined folding version of their T4 stock. It locked up tight and folded cleanly. Unfortunately this is not a commercially offered item. Tom explained that is was more of an experiment and not likely to be offered as a feature anytime soon. My opinion after seeing this stock is that if Manners can build it with a Mini-Chassis and price it to compete with the AICS, it will sell extremely well.

Badger Ordinance

Badger Ordinance had their new Tactical Rapid Adjustable Mounting Point (TRAMP) on hand. This is an interesting piece that allows you to install your Harris or Atlas bipod on a Picatinny Rail. In addition it offers you two sling mounting loops. This is a great option for using an Atlas bipod on an AR platform.

Badger also had one of their Integrated Mount Universal Night Sight (IMUNS) on the table to fondle. If you have an Accuracy International system this is one of the least expensive ways to mount a night vision device ahead of your day optic. It also retains the ability to mount a AI type bipod, Harris type bipod and will let you mount a rail on either side.

G.A. Precision

GA Precision had a slew of goodies on display including a number of rifles built on their Templar action. The two that caught my eye are pictured below. The first was in an Ashbury Chassis System. The second appears to be in a Manners T2 stock. The Ashbury is stunning in it's own right, but the paint job on the other Templar just blew me away.
