2011 SHOT Show Coverage |

The 2011 Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show has wrapped up for another year. It was held at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The SHOT Show is not open to the public. In order to gain entry you have to have some association with a related business. However in many cases the "association" was loose at best. Photos were prohibited except for credentialed members of the press. This was my first time at SHOT and I was not quite sure what to expect. Sensory overload was the feeling of the day. If it was new and hot, it was on display at SHOT. If it was new and top-secret it was hidden away at SHOT. We didn't get the extensive coverage we had hoped for, but we will be better prepared for next year. Surgeon Rifles Preston and company from Surgeon Rifles had their wares on display. Included were several 591 actions and rifles as well as a XL Repeater set into an Accuracy International AX Chassis. We will be doing a review on the Surgeon Short Action Magazine System later this year. |

FN USA FN USA had several of their tactical bolt action rifles on display. FN was recently chosen to supply SPR A3 G sniper rifles to the FBI. Their action is based on the pre-64 Winchester Model 70 design. It is a controlled feed type design that is renown for reliability. Ben Voss, a former Marine Corps Sniper took us through a tour of the rifle's features. They are impressive to say the least. FN had a book of test targets from their rifles. Most were one hole, three shot groups. This speaks to FN's claim that their hammer forged, chrome lined barrels can stand alongside of other "match" barrels without a problem. The FBI's A3 G rifle owes some of it's amazing accuracy to the fact the rifles are glass bedded into the McMillan stocks. FN also introduced their new Tacit al Detachable Box Magazine system. The DBM uses proprietary removable magazines and is available on the A5 SPR. The A5 on display also featured a threaded muzzle. The quality of the rifles on display was outstanding. The actions were smooth and fed and ejected dummy rounds without issue. We are looking forward to fielding one of the SPR's for a real evaluation soon. FN had their USSOCOM PSR entry on display, but requested that no photographs be taken. |

Remington Defense Remington Defense had several interesting new products. The first to catch our eye was the Remington Gas Piston Carbine (RGP). A carbine length short barrel and a mid-length version were on display. Both were in a FDE color. In a world flooded with AR's this may actually be a worthwhile addition. Of course the Remington MSR was on display. When it arrives in the civilian world it will be interesting to see how it competes against the Accuracy International AX. The XM2010 was available to fondle as well. For those departments and individuals who are unable to swallow the price of an MSR the XM2010 may be a better option. The Chassis offers the same advantages without the "switch barrel" capability of the MSR. We also took the chance to handle the RACS (Remington Arms Chassis System). This is the choice for those who already have a Model 700 and would like to get the same advantages of the XM2010. There are some rather unique features on the RACS/MSR/XM2010 chassis. All have removable/replaceable rail sections. There are also cable routing channels running from the forend to the grip area. The stock folds to the right, effectively locking the bolt handle down and protecting it from impact. This is a very worthwhile feature in my opinion. The chassis is also fully adjustable for length of pull, comb height, buttpad location, etc. Release of the RACS is rumoured to be the third quarter of 2011 with a MSRP around $1800. |
